Studying History at Cambridge

Cambridge University is one of the world’s leading centres for the study and teaching of history.

The History Faculty has over 100 academics who publish world-class research. Many have won prestigious prizes for their work. Cambridge academics give lectures and provide seminars and supervisions (tutorials in very small groups) to undergraduates (studying for their first, or 'Bachelor of Arts', degrees) and graduate students (studying for Masters degrees or doctorates).

In the following sections, you will find information about:

• The History course at Cambridge, which ranges from the classical world to present day, and is truly global, and details of the current papers on offer;
• Our internationally-renowned teaching system in which students benefit from small group tuition as well as lectures and seminars;
• The exams which Cambridge History students sit;
• Some of our lecturers and students, via profiles in which they answer questions about the history they have researched, written and studied;
• The Library Facilities available to Cambridge History students are second to none. Central to them is the Seeley Historical Library, one of the largest undergraduate history libraries in the world containing over 90,000 volumes. In addition to the Seeley, students access the University Library which holds a copy of every book published in the UK, and individual Cambridge College libraries which contain thousands more history books. Can you get hold of the books you need as a student? YES! Do you need to buy books? NO!
